Discovery Learning Center is an English language and cultural center founded by Prof. Rachel Woodyatt Rossi. Located in the Parioli neighborhood near Rome's La Sapienza University, it offers a variety of workshops and classes for children and adults.

Purpose
The purpose of Discovery Learning Center is to offer inquiry based lessons in English which connect students to enriching content in History, Science, Art and Math while improving their skills in written and spoken English.
Our highly experienced faculty use creative teaching methods which allow students to learn through inquiry. An old saying states "Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand". As students at the Center become involved in the material of study, they are reinforcing their communication skills in English.
We believe that teaching is a creative art. Our lessons are designed to teach English through exciting, inquiry based methodology.

Inquiry based learning implies involvement that leads to understanding.
Involvement in learning requires possessing skills and attitudes that permit you to seek resolutions to questions and issues while you construct new knowledge.
"Inquiry" is defined as "a seeking for truth, information, or knowledge -- seeking information by questioning." Rather than memorizing facts, which are constantly changing, students need to develop understanding so they can make sense of the enormous mass of data available.
Inquiry based learning implies the need or desire to know, not so much to have "the right answer" as to develop problem solving skills which help find the appropriate resolutions to questions and issues.
These skills enable students to continue questing for knowledge throughout life.

Home Schooling
In the fall of 2009, we will be offering home schooling programs for students of all ages with special needs.
The international schools in Rome are rarely able to accomodate students with special needs in their regular programs.
We can find a curriculum to suit any student's needs and give them the necessary one-on-one tuition to implement the program successfully.

English Language Courses
ENGLISH through HISTORY ( ages 10 – 16 )
Units of study around various themes (i.e. Seven Hills of Rome, Great Renaissance Men and Women, War and Conquests) lasting six to eight weeks will include reading, research , creative writing, dramatization.

ENGLISH through LITERATURE ( ages 10 – 16 )
Poetry, short stories, novels, biographies will be read and analyzed leading to the creation of a student publication including works by all the group members.

ENGLISH through SCIENCE ( ages 10 – 16 )
Various scientific topics (Water, Genetics, Environmental Issues) will be studied in depth. Written and oral reports will be the final products of the course.

ENGLISH through MATH ( ages 10- 14 )
Using cooperative learning activities, students solve problems and discuss the solutions. Ample opportunity will be given for English language practice in understanding and speaking, while reinforcing mathematical skills.

Young readers book club
Join a Book Club for 11-15 year olds meeting every two weeks on Fridays at 4:45pm.
We will vote for the book we want to read , read together, meet after two weeks to discuss the book, our opinions and ideas.
When we finish the book, we will choose a new one to read together.
